Born and raised in Miami’s inner city, I am the product of an urban education system. I had the opportunity to receive a quality education from educators who cared about me as a person and who understood my plight as a child of color. As a result, I received a proper education – one that focused on all of me, the whole child. My experience as a student instilled in me a love of learning, a thirst for knowledge and a desire to give back to my community what I had been given. This desire was fueled by the fact that I witnessed the opposite experience being had by someone very close to me. I vowed to make a difference in the lives of as many children as possible, just as others had done for me. In 1999, I graduated from Florida International University with a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education. The more I learned about the educational system, the more I realized how valuable the application of business principles could be in the classroom and within the system itself. This led me to go on to obtain my Master’s degree in Business Administration. In my current role, I have the opportunity to ensure that students with varying exceptionalities receive a quality education in the proper setting. I have the pleasure of working with families of different backgrounds, many of whom do not know or understand the rights afforded them under state and federal law. It is my goal to ensure that parents who seek to understand how they can advocate for their children have access to the resources that are available to them. Why, you ask? Because all kids matter.
